The old city center of Amersfoort is a hidden gem in the Netherlands, where history and modern life merge seamlessly. This medieval city, known for its well-preserved city wall and picturesque canals, attracts visitors from far and wide. But what makes the old city center of Amersfoort so special? In this blog we take you on a virtual journey through the most beautiful places and the unique charm of this city.

A City with a Rich History

Amersfoort is known for its historical heritage. The old city center, which was once within the city walls, breathes the atmosphere of times gone by. The narrow, cobbled streets, characteristic facades and historic buildings tell the story of a city that was an important trading center in the Middle Ages.

The city was officially walled around 1259 and grew into a prosperous place, partly thanks to its strategic location on the Eem. Much of this history is still visible today in the architecture and structure of the city.

Top Sights in the Old City Center

1. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren (Lange Jan)

The iconic centerpiece of Amersfoort is without a doubt the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren, popularly known as the Lange Jan. The Koppelpoort is a unique combination of a land and water gate and one of the most photographed places in Amersfoort. This impressive entrance gate from the 15th century is not only a historical masterpiece, but also a symbol of the ingenious waterworks of that time. Take a boat trip on the canals to admire this gate from a different perspective.

3. De Muurhuizen

De Muurhuizen are another special aspect of the old city centre. These houses were built on the foundations of the first city wall, which gives them a unique historical value. A walk through this street feels like going back in time.
